Do you not vividly remember that crisp brand new shirt that you wore on your first day to office? Or that favourite shirt of yours that you hold dear to your heart? Did it lose its charm with the passage of time? Well, if you do then I got a solution! STARCH SOLUTION! You can now starch your shirt with clothes steamer and trust me it's not hectic like the traditional starching process. Let me guide you on 'how to starch a shirt with garment steamer?'
Things you'll definitely need:
- Clothes Steamer
- 2 tsp cornstarch
- 450 ml water
- Sauce pan
- Spray bottle
Prepare the Starch:
Take water in a sauce pan and add the cornstarch carefully so that no lumps are formed. Now place the saucepan on the stove and let it boil for just 1 minute. Stir in the meanwhile to prevent formation of lumps. Turn off your stove and put the sauce pan aside to let the mixture cool. Once the mixture is back to room temperature, fill your spray bottle with it.
Step 1: Hang Your Shirt in a Suitable Place
Place your shirt on a hanger (not a wire hanger) and hang it from a suitable place. Make sure you check the supporting background before attempting to steam.
Step 2: Mist Your Shirt & Even Out Heavy Wrinkles
Wet your hands and run them over your shirt to mist them mildly and if your shirt is mildly wrinkled then just smoothen it out with your hands and if it is heavily wrinkled, just run the dryer on low heat to smoothen it partly.
Step 3: Prepare Your Steamer For the Battle
Turn on your garment steamer onto its full-operation mode and wait until steam starts gushing out evenly from its head. Run the steamer over your shirt once and let it dry. You can continue further steaming after you coat your shirt with light starch. Why light starch? Because light starch is ideal for steamers who pass heat through steam where as for direct heat ironing you can use heavy starch.
Step 4: Start Steaming Your Shirt
Now spray the cornstarch mixture on your shirt including your sleeves. Bring the steamer near to your shirt and at a distance of 2-3 inches start steaming your shirt. Move the head slowly over your shirt to get the most out of the starch. Now do the same for the back of the shirt. Lift your sleeves and work along the seam lines too.
Step 5: Let Your Shirt Dry
Place your shirt in a safe place where it doesn't slip off. Let it cool and at the same time dry completely. Once its dries, your shirt is as good as new; crisp, fresh and shiny!
- Please read the manual instructions rendered by your clothes steamer company before attempting starching.
- Check your shirt's label if it's safe for starching.
- Keep a safe distance from the steam for your own safety
- NEVER add the starch to steamer!
With few precautionary measures, you can easily starch your shirt with a garment steamer. This was my way of starching, do you have your own method of starching? I would love to know. Let me know in the comment section.
